some of the things on my mind right now:

bucket trucks,
charting signs + symbols,
and lighting with shadow.

and the patterning continues...

only a couple more left to finish
and then my work with the stainless steel cables will be done.

right on schedule.

this is how we do...

rigging it.
anyway we can...
make it work,
simple and good and to the heartfelt point.

love to hear this sound on the radio these days...
a sound that i recognized and coined in my days at CCAD as hopefull sorrow.
this song is the first one i have heard on mainstream radio,
to display this exact tone of sound.

here is the original genesis and original genesis of recognizing this sound.

you will know when you hear the hopefull sorrow part in the new song.
(if not it is the instrumental that kicks in after "i've loved and i've lost" ; )

we are evolving.

oh and by the way...
this is beautiful.

i recently received news that i have been shortlisted for the city of cleveland's percent for art program RFP
for the new outdoor public art sculpture that will be sited at professor and w. 10th in tremont.

this is part of the professor avenue intersection improvements which NOACA approved as part of their
transportation enhancement initiative. the city of cleveland, tremont west development corporation
and land studio (formerly cleveland public art) are all taking part in making this great project a reality.

looking forward to seeing the selected work and completed streetscape in 2013...

been spending a majority of my time working on the patterns for the indra piece...
i've got my system down pat and perfected, resulting in a nice work flow.

this is always my favorite part of the process in the making of a large scale public art piece...
the hands-on part.

i always make sure to include a part in the process that requires me handling and making a substantial part of the work.
usually public art is designed by the artist, but fabricated completely somewhere else.

i enjoy coming up with ideas that i can make, for the most part, on my own...
while i still have the want and energy to do so.

think the difference in building a house by yourself...
to that of designing a house yourself and then hiring a contractor to build it.
both very satisfying processes, but one much more personal and connected.

5.01.2012

got a package in the mail today...
what a nice & unexpected surprise for this foggy tuesday afternoon.

it's a work of art by elaine hullihen,
in completion of our conversation and interaction for artist for artist.

this is what elaine made for me...
and this is what i made for her.

A friend who is far away is sometimes much nearer than one who is at hand.
Is not the mountain far more awe-inspiring and more clearly visible to one passing through the valley
than to those who inhabit the mountain?

was in columbus yesterday to do a site visit and to meet with some installation crews.
plan on going back when the weather is nicer to document all the changes that have happened
to the city since i lived there last, which would now be 6 years ago.
some really cool stuff is going on around the city... especially in the realm of public art.

also wanted to say a big "thank you" to the following blogs for posting about my work:
art boom, gooood, nomad, made in slant,  culture wickdumpjekunst and spirit of spider.
really like the last blog listed, be sure to have a look around the site here.

wishing everyone a great weekend...

4.25.2012

i got swage...
my cleveland-made swaging tool that is, and some swiss-made wire cutters to boot.
these are the tools i have been using to make the piece indra,
which i am currently working on for columbus state community college.

this will be my first permanent outdoor public sculpture--
my first permanent indoor public sculpture was for kent state university which you can see here.

feels very satisfying to have graduated from columbus college of art and design in 2000,
which by the way is right down the street from columbus state community college...
and then 12 years later to find myself back in columbus installing a public art piece for the college and city.

good stuff.

4.24.2012

yesterday's wind storm made some rather epic waves at the marina down the street from where i live...
so much so that it became an all day spectacle for the media and passerby's.

and of course when there are ka-billions of water droplets suspended in mid-air
with just the right amount of sunlight... yep, you guessed it.
there were lot's of rainbows on hand for our viewing pleasure too.

bluejay even managed to get soaked by one of the larger inland waves...
which in our minds equals to a good start to the week.

4.23.2012

a couple of photos from around the studio,
a collection... or two... or three can be seen.

also, some more press about my work can be found at rhumboogiewtf art historydesign ark and modernism...
just to name a recent few.

i like it especially when people take the time to slow down the blog & post stream,
to reflect and write a personal word or two about the work in addition to the required cut & paste.
thanks to all of you...

to make an impression... a material must stay fluid and flexible.
maintaining a balance of water to substance.

without moisture, particles shrink, crack
and separate themself from them self.

to always remember to look into all the nooks and crannies...

and to have the boldness to ask deep questions,
while remaining undeniably flexible
to accept all answers, seen & unforeseen.

4.19.2012

we'd like to say hello and welcome to all our new visitors to the website and blog...
it seems as though stillness in motion has been making many rounds through the ether net,
and inviting people to take a peek into our little slice of the world.

what a nice surprise and it's definitely a pleasure to inspire so many people around the world.
(it always comes back in full return-- send-- and receive)

so "thank you" goes out to all those that are here, feel free to have a look around,
and to this is colossal, creative fluxjournal du design, junk culture, devid sketchbook and a house mouse...
to name just a few, for helping to share the work and the feeling that stillness in motion conjures within.

found these today on our walk.

reminded me to take things step-by-step and to keep my cool even when things get hot...

thanks for the reminder mystery children,
because elephants never forget.
